Ages 6-8

Your child has entered a new stage in childhood with the rapid development of cognitive skills from memory to logic.  Activities that involve memory and problem solving and are perfect for your child.

Priority: Empower & Motivate

Entering into the elementary school curriculum, your child will begin structured learning that focuses on academic subjects of math, language literacy, science, and history/social studies.  For your child, there’s a lot to adapt and learn academically and socially, so it’s important to fold Chinese learning into your child’s everyday routine without overloading him/her with more work.  Allow your child to choose what he/she wants to learn and give positive reinforcement for completing his/her assignments.

  • Create a print-rich environment at home with your child.  Get your child involved in the making or placing of the labels, signs, and charts in Mandarin Chinese.  A Chinese character chart is highly recommended.

  • Help build a positive attitude towards learning Mandarin Chinese by providing an inviting and pressure-free environment where your child can make mistakes and choose freely.

  • Develop a Chinese learning routine that offers positive reinforcement. When your child completes the routine, you can offer them a sticker to put on their routine chart or give a kiss or hug.  Simple rewards can be very effective!

  • Create an engaging Chinese learning lesson plan that is based on your child’s learning preferences and current interests.  For example, if your child is showing interest in Pokemon, find Chinese materials on Pokemon or send us a request!

  • Encourage interaction during reading.  Help your child identify words he/she can’t pronounce and help them write the words on a word wall for visual immersion.

  • Encourage your child to express his/her opinions, ideas, and feelings in Mandarin Chinese and help identify new vocabularies that are useful for self-expression.

  • Improve your child’s vocabulary by using Mandarin Chinese in everyday conversation and listening to stories in Mandarin Chinese.
