Summer is almost here, which means travel season is just around the corner.

This year, my mom signed us up for a family tour to Japan near Mount Fuji. Since we would be spending a lot of time at airports, on buses, and exploring new places, I thought it would be fun to weave a little Chinese learning into the adventure. As I started planning, I realized there weren't many Chinese travel activities for kids that connected travel, pretend play, and language learning in a meaningful way.

As I started preparing for our trip, I found myself thinking about all the little things children experience when they travel. Checking in at the airport. Looking for the boarding gate. Watching luggage disappear onto the conveyor belt. Peeking at the airplane menu. Getting excited when the flight attendants come by with drinks and snacks.

Turning Travel into Play

Traveling with a four-year-old looks very different than it did a few years ago. When my son had just turned two, we brought his bulky car seat onto the plane because that's what we had done when he was a baby. We quickly realized he was perfectly happy sitting in the airplane seat by himself! But by then it was too late. We ended up moving him between our seats and the car seat, which, of course, had its own airplane seat.

Since then, every trip has reminded me how quickly children grow and change. My packing list is constantly evolving.

This trip came with a new challenge too. I was traveling with both my son and my mom, who is now in her mid-seventies. I still carried the same big backpack I used when he was a baby. This time it wasn't filled with bottles and milk supplies, but somehow it was just as bulky with toys and activities to keep him entertained.

Taking the Printables on the Plane

I was so glad I finished this travel unit just before we flew to Japan so I could bring some of the printables with me. On the flight home, I pulled out the travel flashcards and started asking my son what he thought each picture meant.

To my surprise, he remembered quite a lot. He recognized airport signs like "Arrival" and "Departure," and after we finished the flashcards, he immediately asked, "What else do you have?"

I was honestly a little surprised. He genuinely enjoyed them!

When we got home, I made a few final adjustments to the unit based on his feedback.

A Little Feedback from My Most Important Tester

One of my favorite moments happened when I used one of the conversation prompts and asked him whether he would rather be a pilot or a flight attendant.

Without hesitation, he answered, "Flight attendant."

"Why?" I asked.

"Because they give people drinks and gifts," he said. "I want to give people gifts too."

I couldn't help but laugh.

That simple conversation reminded me why I love creating these resources. Children often notice completely different things than we do. While I was thinking about gates, luggage, and boarding passes, he was focused on kindness and helping others.

And honestly, that's what I hope this unit encourages: meaningful conversations, imaginative play, and a little more curiosity about the world around us.

Back at home, we continued the adventure with travel-themed Chinese learning activities.

One of my favorite things about travel is how naturally language comes to life. Suddenly words like window, gate, passport, and airplane aren't just vocabulary words anymore—they're part of a real experience.
