Beyond the Worksheet: Meaningful Mid-Autumn Festival Activities for Kids

5 Best Free Chinese Audiobooks for Children learning Mandarin

With Mid-Autumn Festival coming up, I've been thinking about Mid-Autumn Festival activities for kids and what I actually want children to get out of them.

Of course, there are so many things we can teach children about 中秋節 (Mid-Autumn Festival)—mooncakes, lanterns, the moon, the Jade Rabbit, and all the Chinese vocabulary that comes along with them.

But when I sit down to make a worksheet, I usually start with a different question:

What will a child actually do with this page?

Will they color it? Cut it apart? Make something with it?

Will they ask questions?

Could it start a conversation?

Could it even get them away from the table and out into the world?

Those questions led me to create two very different little Mid-Autumn activities this year.

What's Inside My Mooncake?

The first started with something many young children already love to do: coloring.

But I wanted there to be more to it than coloring a picture and moving on.

With What's Inside My Mooncake?, children color their mooncake, cut out the pieces, fold and glue them together, and then...

open the mooncake to discover a surprise inside.

Behind the mooncake is a little Mid-Autumn scene with a rabbit, lantern, moon, flowers, and other details to discover and color.

Of course, I had to let my son try it first.

He decided to color one of the moons green.

Then, when he got to another moon, he wanted to leave it white.

He told me that was because the moon he sees at night is white.

And just to be sure, he ran over to our balcony to check. 😄

Sure enough, he came back and continued coloring.

At some point, he invited me to color with him, so we sat there working on it together.

Then came the cutting.

He was very eager to do that part himself.

He's still learning to use scissors, so I gave him the reveal page and let him have a go.

Was it a perfect circle?

Definitely not.

But watching him concentrate so hard as he carefully worked his way around it was probably one of my favorite parts.

It didn't need to be perfect. It was something he had made himself.

Now the finished mooncake sits on his desk, and every once in a while when he's sitting there, he'll open the two halves again to see what's hiding inside.

That's exactly the kind of interaction I hope for when I make something like this.

The activity might begin with coloring, cutting and gluing, but somewhere along the way we talked about the moon, looked outside, colored together, practiced using scissors, and made something he wanted to keep.

And Chinese can simply be woven into those moments.

月餅/月饼 (mooncake).

月亮 (moon).

兔子 (rabbit).

燈籠/灯笼 (lantern).

The Chinese becomes part of the experience rather than the reason for it.

My Moon Walk

For the second activity, I wanted to do almost the opposite.

I wanted to make a printable that encouraged children to leave the table.

My Moon Walk is a tiny foldable book children can hold in their hands and bring outside for an evening walk.

It begins with one very simple question:

Can you find the moon?

Then it encourages children to look a little closer.

What shape is the moon tonight?

What color does it look?

Can you see any clouds or stars?

And then we start using more than our eyes.

Close your eyes. What do you hear?

How does the night air feel?

What did you notice on your walk?

I wanted these questions to be open enough that children have to look at their own surroundings for the answers.

There isn't one correct finished book.

One child might think the moon looks yellow.

Another might hear a dog barking.

Someone might notice the breeze.

Another child might forget about the moon altogether because they've discovered a tiny bug crawling along the sidewalk.

Two children can take the exact same walk and come home with completely different stories.

I love that.

Seeing the World Through Their Eyes

As adults, I think we're naturally quick to point things out to children.

"Look at the moon!"

"There's a star!"

"Can you say 月亮?"

But lately, I'm trying to leave more room for different questions.

"What do you see?"

"What do you hear?"

"What does it look like to you?"

"What did you notice?"

My son's green moon was a tiny reminder of that for me.

I could have told him, "The moon isn't green."

Instead, he colored it green.

Then he thought about the moon he actually sees at night, decided that one should be white, and went outside to check for himself.

That's far more interesting to me than getting the "right" color on the worksheet.

I want the page to leave room for children to bring their own perspective to it.

And when Chinese is part of those experiences, the words have something real to attach themselves to.

月亮 isn't only a picture of a moon on a flashcard.

It's that moon they went outside to find.

風 isn't only the Chinese word for wind.

It's the breeze they felt while walking outside.

Language becomes connected to something they experienced, noticed, wondered about, or created themselves.

Even Better Together

Both activities can also be wonderful with siblings, friends, or a classroom.

Give a group of children the same Mooncake Surprise activity and you'll probably end up with completely different mooncakes.

One might be green. 😉

Another might be rainbow-colored.

Some circles will be perfectly cut.

Others definitely won't be.

And that's part of the fun.

The Moon Walk can become a shared experience too.

Afterward, bring everyone together and ask what they noticed.

"I heard a bird!"

"I saw a really bright star!"

"My moon looked orange!"

"I felt the wind!"

Suddenly, one little printable has created opportunities to observe, share, compare, listen, and talk with one another.

The Paper Is Just the Beginning

When I make worksheets, this is what I'm thinking about.

Not how much information I can fit onto a page.

Not how many vocabulary words a child can memorize.

But what might happen because of that page.

Maybe it becomes a craft at the kitchen table.

Maybe a child invites you to sit down and color beside them.

Maybe cutting out a not-quite-perfect circle becomes something they're incredibly proud of.

Maybe opening a paper mooncake starts a conversation about the rabbit, lantern, or moon.

Or maybe a tiny folded book gets tucked into a little hand and taken outside after dinner.

The paper is just the beginning. The learning happens in everything that comes after.
